I Lost It In Oklahoma City

When we left Houston, we took a small, short, large detour and headed north (7hrs) to Oklahoma City.  We have family there that we wanted to see.  I was feeling pretty good and chose to take this opportunity while we could.  We drove in pouring down rain most of the 7 hours.  Little did we know that there was flooding in Dallas and south Oklahoma and we happened to be right in the middle of it.  Ignorance is bliss.

God kept us safe and we arrived in Moore, OK to have a short visit with our cousin.  Visited with his daughters and son-in-laws and were blessed with a wonderful meal.  It is amazing to see God working all around me.  After a short visit and sharing of news, we gathered together in prayer.  Thank you Sam & Belinda….I’ll always remember the lovely prayer.

Now it’s a short drive up to the city and get checked into our main stay hotel.  We were exhausted and ready to get my tired little body in a horizontal position asap.  After checking in, getting the keys, finding a place to park, unloading as little as possible to get us through the night, we were headed up to the 2nd story, via elevator.  We got to the room and it hadn’t been cleaned.  That was the first indication that this was going to be a long night.  We dropped everything into the hall, hubby marched down to the lobby to speak with Newton, as I kept an eye on our luggage.  Dear Newton gave us keys to floor 3 and his apologies.  Here we go, loaded up our arms again (thank you for rolling luggage) and headed up to the 3rd floor.  Opened the door to only find the bathroom and closet doors off and the room in the middle of a major paint job.   I glanced down the hall and noticed another couple in distress carrying all of their luggage headed for the elevator.  That’s when we looked at each other and said….let’s go.   That’s another trip for hubby to give Newton a piece of his mind.  As I headed directly to the car with my hands full. (it’s almost midnight)  I’m walking at a snails pace.  My tummy incision killing me, I need my medications…..grrrrr.

Got to hotel #2.  Beautiful, new and pretty pricey. But at this time of night  morning…..we don’t care.  It’s unload the car again, I’m to the point of just sleeping in my clothes and not carry anything in.   Loaded up the pull cart anyway and headed to the 3rd floor.  It’s off to bed.  Thank you Lord for my pillows and a nice place to sleep.

Good morning.  Left a ‘do not disturb’ sign on the door.  Told the cleaning lady as we met her in the hall, no service today.  I carried all of my medications and my computer with me and it’s off to IHOP before heading to our brothers house.   It’s so good to see him and his wife.  Relived some good times and prayed for days ahead.  We are very glad we made the decision to come see them.

Nightfall.  It’s back to the hotel.  We’re planning to head on out to Carlsbad, NM in the morning.  We won’t try to drive the entire way, but about 7 hours.  We’ll spend the night in Lubbock, TX then get home early Sunday afternoon. We walked into our room and the first thing I noticed was the room was cleaned. hmmmmm?  I opened the little refrigerator door and found my orange juice (drink that w/one of my meds) was missing.  I’m assuming poured out. Maybe she thought we weren’t coming back?  Nah!  Our luggage was still in the room.  Sent hubby out for an orange juice run in the lobby.  We were a little frustrated, but again, we’re tired and need to hit the sack.

Good morning?  Well, I didn’t notice last night, but my hair brush was missing.  Along with my $20 jar of Bath & Body Works cream. (Lemon/Lime Souffle…girls best friend). Also missing was my blow dry brush.  Now, that has just touched a nerve with me.  I wasn’t too happy.  Trying to make the best of it, I jumped into the warm shower and calmed down. (good place to enjoy the steam from the warm water and talk to God)  Ok, I forgive her, guess she needed that cream more than I do.

Towel dryed, rubbed my hand through my hair and I had a wad of hair as big as a baseball in my hand.  Today is the day.  I spent the next hour or so pulling my hair out. Ha!  It was pretty fun really.  I got as much as I could, then took the scissors and cut my hair about 2 inches all over.  Today is my first ‘pretty hat’ day.  This is the day that God has made!  We’re headed home.  A beautiful day for traveling.

As I left the city limits of OKC I was chuckling.  God knew all along that I didn’t have any more use of my hair brushes.  I hope the same little housekeeper gets to clean my room again, because I left her a full head of hair in the trash can.  I’d like to see the look on her face!    Yep, I’m onery!   I definitely lost it in Oklahoma City.

Goodbye Houston

The day has come to pack up my bags and head on home.  I am well enough to travel without too much discomfort. It’s been 21 days since my surgery and 14 days into my first chemotherapy treatment.

The saddest part is leaving my kids and grandkids.  But there is joy in my heart pulling me back to my own home and bed.

Words can’t express how thankful I am to have such a wonderful family.  It was their love and encouragement that kept me going.  The deep belly laughs, the Xbox marathons, card games, smiles and hugs.  I’ll cherish forever.

Now, I’m looking forward to their visits, text messages and phone calls.

End Of Phase One

I came to Houston for the possible ‘Total Pelvic Exenteration”.  Didn’t happen, as I have explained before.

I did however receive my first Chemotherapy treatment.  The first of many to come.  I’m set up to do a treatment every 21 days.  I’m not any different than anyone else receiving their treatment.  I mainly wanted to share my experiences for my family and grand kids. So please forgive me if you have ‘been there, done that’ and it sounds like I’m focusing on something that was not so important to you.  This is my story and how I want to remember that day.

After donating my blood for the testings, I met with my Doctor.  This is the dreaded appointment where they removed all 76 of my abdominal staples.  It took longer than usual to do the staple removal because there were so many of them.  My little assistant nurse was from El Paso and we were in deep discussion over the illegal immigrants coming across the border.  That kept my mind off of the torture in the mid-section.

Then I had to meet with the ‘Pain Management’ team to discuss  my pain and how I was going to be controlling that pain.  We waited around even longer before finally being released for a ‘light lunch’.  Then it was off the the Infusion Team for my IV’s.

It was around 4:00 p.m. when I was taken into my own little cubicle with a comfortable bed, TV, and a straight, hardback chair for my family to sit.  Now it’s on to warming my arms in hot towels to try to scare a vein up to poke with a catheter.  That was another 30 minutes.  At least one stick later, I was off to the races. I had five pre-medications before reaching the ‘big stuff’.  The anti-nausea, the stomach protector, the anti-allergin, etc.  My first ‘big stuff’ was administered for another hour.  I was not happy about the Magnesium I had to have, it really sets the arm/veins on fire.  So, bring on the ice packs for a little relief.   Now, it’s time for the last “big stuff”.  It’s gonna take 4 more hours and then we’re good to go.

I was looking for a little sympathy as I waited out this 4 hour deal.  Just so happens that my tumor sits prettily in between the bladder and colon.  You get a bit of fluids running through the kidneys and that fills the old bladder girl.  That in turn pushes against the tumor, causing a bit of pressure and pain.  The restroom was close by, a big praise. Because for every 20 minutes after the 4 hour procedure began, I was up, dragging my IV pole behind me at a fairly quick pace.  Sometimes I was successful, and other times I didn’t quite get the door open before flooding the joint.

When the last of meds were dripped in and flushed, we were released to go.  It was now around 10:20 p.m.  It had been a grueling wait for my hubby and dtr, that’s for sure.  Then it was another 40 minutes to drives home.  I didn’t have time to experience anything weird or different, just the pain of the road vibration jarring that incision. (such a waste of a good scapel)

About the fourth day, I had some funny abdominal tingling.  Then stinging sensations down my legs. But that’s about it.  I didn’t experience nausea, for which I am forever grateful.  I was tired for several days, but that was due to my shortage of B-12 and not the chemo.    I’ve gradually gotten stronger each and every day.

I’ve been out and about several times, shopping and riding around.  I have eight more days until treatment number 2.  I have made arrangements to have them back home.  I was assured by my doctors that I have a very easy regiment and the orders can be given most anywhere.  They also explained that after my second treatment, I will be experiencing the hair loss and a few more unpleasantries.  I’m prepared for all……I’ve got my armor and my new chemo hats.
