Even though we can’t stop this disease, we can try to control our symptoms by trying to become healthier. We can choose to take better care of our bodies by becoming more aware of a few lifestyle changes to improve our health. We have drug therapies, nutritional supplements and other treatments, but have you thought of some practical things to be more aware of?
Follow Me
- Try Exercise
It not only helps reduce stress and anxiety, it gets you going for the day. Take long walks and be consistent. Not only will you help your bones, improve blood pressure, it might improve your digestive tract.
- If You’re Smoking, Quit!
Studies have shown that smokers are more likely to develop Crohn’s disease. Plus, it does cause cancer, heart disease and other major problems. It will be the best thing you can do for yourself. Look at the money you’ll save, not only on the smokes, but your future health care.
- Pain Remedies
What are you choosing for your toothache, backache, headache? Did you know that Crohn’s patients are advised to use Acetophenamine. (Tylenol) Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Naproxen Sodium all have been known to make our inflammation worse? You don’t want to encourage a flare.
- Eliminate Pressure
Watch your activities. Enjoy your life and try to avoid stressful situations. If it’s difficult for you to ‘get out’ at certain times of the day, go at a more convenient time. Don’t force yourself into doing things because others expect it from you.
- Get To Know Your Body
Experiment with anti-diarrhea products that help you get out more. Is it hard to out after a meal? Try calcium carbonates for fluid absorption in the bowel. By becoming more aware of how your body reacts , you can take more control. Work with your doctor, don’t expect your doctor to give you all of your answers. Drink lots of water. Diarrhea robs your body of much needed fluids.
- Watch Your Food
Most Crohn’s patients do not do well with dairy products. Switch to soy products, yogurt, low-lactose milk and cheeses. Try an enzyme product for the lactose intolerance. Dairy products have a tendency to produce diarrhea, bloating, gas, and abdominal pain. Experiment with fiber, low-fiber is usually better. Soda drinks are very high in sugar and acid, these are prone to make your symptoms flare. Again, know your body well enough to give yourself a break if these things bother you.
Talk to your health care provider about any of these mentioned. Think of your physician as your team leader and help him/her help you. You’ll be better for it.
